About Reactive Sealers for High Performance Concrete

Until recently, the market for Concrete Countertop sealers consisted of sealing systems involving various forms of penetrating sealers (similar to grout sealers) and top coatings such as waxes and epoxy coatings. These types of sealers, while providing adequate stain and acid protection, usually require some sort of maintenance program and ultimately may require resealing after a number of years. Typically these sealers also created a high build, glossy finish similar to wood with a multiple coats of varnish. Without precise application, many of these applications are also prone to delaminating from the surface of the concrete countertop.

However, at McGregor Designs we are now almost exclusively using reactive sealer technology. Unlike the top coat sealers, reactive sealer is effective for the lifetime of the concrete. The secret lies in the reactive chemistry at a molecular level where the sealer bonds with the CaOH that is produced by the hydration of Portland cement. This bond allows it to be applied to the smoothest of polished surfaces without risk of delaminating. The result is a nice thin coat that is barely noticeable, and reflects the natural raw beauty of our High Performance Concrete. The sealer is USDA food safe, VOC free, and approved for commercial food prep areas. The molecular structure of the sealer and the density of the concrete are naturally antimicrobial.
